Before planning your move, check your tenancy type and the notice requirements that apply. Use the contact and address-for-service details in your current tenancy agreement, and keep a copy of your written notice.

Check the notice you need

Tenants generally need at least 21 days’ written notice to end a periodic tenancy, unless the landlord agrees to a shorter period. Allow for the time needed to serve the notice correctly. Tenancy Services explains the tenant’s ending-a-tenancy process.

A fixed-term tenancy has different rules for ending at its expiry date or leaving early. Check the current fixed-term guidance before assuming you can leave on a chosen date.

Confirm arrangements with your manager

Prepare for the final day

Arrange the final inspection and key return. Remove your belongings and rubbish, leave the property reasonably clean and tidy, and keep a record of its condition. Discuss any proposed bond deductions and only agree to a refund amount you accept. Keep your forwarding contact details up to date.
